PDF Lincoln's Boys: John Hay, John Nicolay, and the War for Lincoln's Image with Free PDF EDITION Download Now!

A timely and intimate look into Abraham Lincoln’s White House through the lives of his two closest aides and confidants Lincoln’s official secretaries John Hay and John Nicolay enjoyed more access, witnessed more history, and knew Lincoln better than anyone outside of the president’s immediate family. Hay and Nicolay were the gatekeepers of the Lincoln legacy. They read poetry and attendeded the theater with the president, commiserated with him over Union army setbacks, and plotted electoral strategy. They were present at every seminal event, from the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation to Lincoln’s delivery of the Gettysburg Address—and they wrote about it after his death. In their biography of Lincoln, Hay and Nicolay fought to establish Lincoln’s heroic legacy and to preserve a narrative that saw slavery—not states’ rights—as the sole cause of the Civil War. As Joshua Zeitz shows, the image of a humble man with uncommon intellect who rose from obscurity to become a storied wartime leader and emancipator is very much their creation. Drawing on letters, diaries, and memoirs, Lincoln’s Boys is part political drama and part coming-of-age tale—a fascinating story of friendship, politics, war, and the contest over history and remembrance.

PDF Lincoln's Boys: John Hay, John Nicolay, and the War for Lincoln's Image with Free PDF EDITION!

‘Lincoln’s Boys’ is a topnotch history book. The nonfiction work focuses on President Lincoln’s two White House secretaries, John Nicolay and John Hay. As Mr. Zeitz states, “Presidential staffs then were very small, and the job of secretary traditionally carried more authority and importance than its title would suggest. By custom, presidential secretaries lived in the White House and served as the primary interface between members of Congress, the press, and the public, on the one hand, and the commander in chief, on the other.” Nicolay and Hays were still wet behind the ears when it came to Washington’s ways and many thought they, being both still in their twenties, were much too young and inexperienced to be in such powerful positions. The highly intelligent men were close friends but polar opposites in disposition. Their contrasts worked very well together in helping to advance President Lincoln’s objectives but they had many detractors who envied their positions as well as their youth.Mr. Zeitz gives a quick overview of Nicolay’s and Hay’s early lives then goes into more detail about important events that preceded Lincoln winning the presidency. The first 170 pages of the 339-page book conclude with the president’s death and the two secretaries moving to their Europe assignments. It then follows Nicolay’s and Hay’s lives until they began writing the ten-volume Lincoln biography. The author spends more time in the book covering Hay’s life than Nicolay’s. By page 230, Mr. Zeitz finally starts explaining the various efforts to memorialize Lincoln through the written word. Literature is always a reflection of the times, and the author does a good job of describing the mindsets of people from the Civil War era through to present day. Nicolay’s and Hay’s lifetimes were periods in which the Lost Cause myth was invented, Jim Crow began, and the Gettysburg Address went from obscurity to becoming one of our nation’s most cherished speeches. ‘Lincoln’s Boys’ explains how the president’s reputation evolved through the decades. Robert Todd Lincoln, the Lincolns’ only surviving child and gatekeeper of President Lincoln’s papers, plays an important part in the story. He guarded his dad’s papers like he was Gollum with his friggin’ Precious. Contrary to historian standards today, “the boys” agreed that Robert Lincoln had final editorial discretion on their mammoth biography. Despite being hamstrung by Robert Lincoln’s sensitivities, the 15-year effort resulted in a work that is still influential today. The book includes eight pages of black-and-white photographs.Mr. Zeitz writes in an engaging manner. At no point did I find ‘Lincoln’s Boys’ boring. The author not only brings the two men alive on the page but also Lincoln’s cameos. Mr. Zeitz explains the evolution of their attitudes about the rapidly changing world around. ‘Lincoln’s Boys’ shows these two smart dudes were loyal to their last dying breaths. There’s no doubt, if there’s such a thing as reincarnation, their loyalty would make Nicolay and Hay great obedient dogs.
