Full disclosure, I've been knitting for most of my life and I am not afraid of math. This book goes into detail about how to create different shawl shapes...including the mathematics of shaping and a recipes to create your own shawl. There is a wonderful discussion about the effects of different stitches and the pitfalls of some combinations - what happens to the body when an i-cord or garter edge is added. What types of stitches patterns work with variegiated vs solid yarns. The writing style is not dry. It is peppered with amusing anecdotes about mistakes Kate and Kim made along the way. The authors are clearly experienced knitters - Kate Atherley is an renowned technical editor - Kim McBrien Evans is the genius behind the colors at "Indigo Dragonfly" As a result, the book is well written, well edited, and full of amazing color comments.I wanted to try knitting a pattern or two prior to reviewing. It is fortunate that all the patterns are written so the shawls can be stopped at any point (great for spinners who want to use every inch of yarn and can't get more) because I ran out of yarn making the semi-circle pi shawl (a shawlette now). The recipe was clear and easy to follow. I haven't completed a second shawl yet.A side note: the people modeling the shawls look more like me and less like typical "models". Beautiful, yet mature. It's nice to see what the garments look like on a person who might not be a size small
